Early family member in Texas before Al-Anon existed, her first meeting was in 1948. She attended her first meeting in Amarillo in 1948. She helped establish Al-Anon in Texas and became the 1st Texas Delegate to the first Delegate Panel convened by WSO in NYC. She next served as a Trustee to WSO and knew both Bill and Lois Wilson. Arbutus gives us a perspective on the impact alcoholism has on every family member, not just the alcoholic. She learned to see the difference between the person she loved and the alcoholism they suffered under. This collection contains many talks. In each, she adds something different from the others. To get a perspective on the early days of Al-Anon, we recommend you listen to several. Many include a period of answering questions directly from the attendees, something Arbutus enjoyed doing. She gives a perspective on use of the Big Book by Al-Anon members and AFG Literature. Her and husband Bill started recording conventions and events on a reel tape recorder and amassed a large collection of talks from across the US. More of her talks are in the Arbutus collection.

Donna E - Story - Crested Butte Mountain Conference ~ 2001 |
Edwin James Mutum was born in Davenport, Iowa in 1950. Ed began drinking while a teen. He was known by the police in his town as a thief, alcoholic, and drug abuser. He was in and out of jail, and in and out of the hospital for overdoses. He moved to Los Angeles, hoping to work in show business. There he met Clancy who became his sponsor. He evidently became the business manager for the Harlem Globetrotters. He married and had children. After a business deal that failed he moved back to Davenport Iowa. There he started a shelter for substance abusers. Six years later, at a retreat, he decided to enter the ministry. In 2000 Ed graduated from Seminary in Dubuque, Iowa. He then served as a Methodist pastor in churches in Iowa. Ed is well known for his story of helping one of the men involved in his fathers death. The man, at 17 year old at the time, had acted as the look out man for a group of teens trying to rob a bar. The result resulted in the death of three customers, one of them Ed's father. After spending 30 years in prison, the case was over turned. Ed went and spoke to the parole board, asking that the man that acted as the lookout, be released, he even offered to have him live with him while transitioning from prison to private life. Ed's talks on forgiving and becoming free of hate are very moving. Ed died of a heart attach while shoveling snow at his house in 2008.
“I love you and there is nothing you can do about it!” - Ed
